Members and guests at the Singapore DAB Forum meeting

Singapore DAB Forum
A total of 41 members and invited guests attended the Singapore DAB Forum (SDF) meeting at the MICA Building on Tuesday, 21 September 2004. Formed in 1999, the role of the SDF is to advise the Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA) on the development and implementation of Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) in Singapore and to encourage the industry to work together where there is a common ground.

Mr. James Yip, CEO of MediaCorp Radio Singapore, is the new Chairman of the SDF. Comprising of three Sub-Forums, the Technical Forum will be chaired by Mr. Asaad Sameer Bagharib, Senior Director of MediaCorp Radio Singapore. Mr. Giulio Dorrucci, Chairman and CEO of PGK Media, will chair the Development Forum while the Promotion & Marketing Forum will be chaired by Ms. Koh Soo Boon, Managing Partner of iGlobe Partners.

In Singapore, feasibility studies on DAB began as early as 1996 before the launch of Digital Radio - a digital service of MediaCorp Radio, on 19 Nov 1999. DAB listeners can now tune in to 13 radio stations, 6 of which can only be heard exclusively on Digital Radio. DAB stations are enhanced with textual information such as song titles & artistes' names on DLS service plus graphical slideshow on PAD service. There is also a dedicated NPAD data channel service that includes flight information, weather updates, traffic reports, news in text with pictures, and even lottery results.

Over the past 4 years, there have been several innovative DAB project developments such as subscription-based Rediffusion DAB service, Radio-Digital Mobile (RDM) and Mr. Taxi-Smart for transportation, Socrates for education, the emergency SCDF DLS text broadcast as well as eBillboard, among others. Hear what our Listeners have to say about Digital Radio...

"I have always tuned to Chinese Evergreens since I bought "The Bug" on 5 Aug 2004 because I really enjoyed the old 70's movie theme songs that you play. Well to me, Digital Radio's Chinese Evergreens is the best station that I have ever come across."
-
Ms. S. S. Tay

"I've heard of hi-fi sound, FM stereo, Dolby, and now digital radio. Wow, what crystal clear sound with superb separation. More listeners should switch to DAB with no regrets, it’s almost like switching from dial-up to broadband."
- Mr. J. Gan
