A mobile demo from KBS comparing the TV quality between an NSTC analogue versus the DMB digital system

Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (DMB)
DMB is an extension of the Eureka-147 DAB technology and enables the delivery of TV, video, digital quality audio and other exciting data services to mobile devices. At the forthcoming International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam which will be held on 9-14 September, the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) will be conducting a terrestrial DMB (DMB-T) demonstration with handheld DMB receivers from Samsung, PersTel and onTimetek. The Korean government has recently approved the introduction of DMB-T broadcasts of television programmes to mobile devices. Commercial products are expected to be available to consumers by the end of the year from the Korean manufacturers such as Samsung, PersTel and LG.

DAB Receivers Continue to Grow
In Singapore, the total number of DAB owners have grown by almost 400% over the last 2 years since the launch of Digital Radio in Nov 1999. DAB looks set to grow further in Singapore with the recent launch of more affordable DAB receivers such as the PURE Digital's Evoke-1 plus many more interesting products over the next few months. In the UK, it is predicted that there will be more than one million DAB owners by the end of 2004. In fact, an independent report by Eureca Research forecasts that the installed base of DAB receivers in Europe will increase from around 512,000 at the end of 2003 to 39.55 million at the end of 2010 representing a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 86.1%.

Hear what our Listeners have to say about Digital Radio...

“Firstly, just wanna say that DAB has been a pretty neat thing to have for the car stereo. I've been enjoying it immensly, especially those DAB-only channels like the 24-hr dance music on Digital Radio's Club Play - no DJs and no ads! And I reckon the other channel that has been improved dramatically is MediaCorp Radio's Symphony as orchestral music just doesn't do itself justice without that sort of audio clarity! Another happy DAB user…”
