UK Government Report Says All UK National and Local Radio Stations to Be  DAB-Only From 2015

The UK Government published its final Digital Britain report on 16 Jun 09 with a number of actions to secure DAB digital radio as the primary radio broadcast platform in the UK. It proposes all national and the majority of local radio stations will be transmitted on DAB-only within 6 years, signaling the end of national FM services in the UK. A five point plan for DAB to be in all new cars by 2013 is proposed.

The Digital Britain report sets out a five point plan to encourage the take-up of digital radios in cars: work with manufacturers so that vehicles sold with radio are digitally enabled by the end of 2013; support a common logo for digital radios and ensure that non-DAB radios, and their limitations, are clearly labeled; encourage the development of portable digital converters, such as the Pure Highway, and the integration of DAB into other vehicle devices such as sat-navs; promote the introduction of more sophisticated traffic information via DAB and comprehensive marketing by broadcasters; and work with the European partners, including the European Commission, to develop a common European approach to digital radio.

The Digital Britain Report makes specific reference to the WorldDMB Receiver Profiles and identifies the need for a common logo for digital radios, a process which has already started as part of the Receiver Profiles work.

The Chorus 3 Digital Radio and Audio Baseband Processor from Frontier Silicon

The Chorus 3 baseband processor is the latest generation of integrated system-on-chip, providing an optimized solution for WorldDMB profile 1 and profile 2 DAB, DAB+, DMB-A and FM-RDS broadcast receivers and Internet radio products.

Chorus 3 is an advanced programmable baseband receiver capable of receiving DAB/DAB+ and DMB-A broadcasts as well as being able to receive and decode internet radio streaming audio. It incorporates a number of mixed signal system components as well as advanced peripherals previously only available as discrete additional components, providing significant space, cost and power savings.

The CPU provides the processing power to receive digital radio, decode Internet media and operate the user interface in the system. It is powerful enough to be the master processor in any digital radio system. Coupled to the CPU are a host of interfaces that allow interfacing to displays, external memory storage and PCs, allowing Chorus 3-based receivers to connect to other devices with minimal additional components.
