In a historic move, Italy’s regulator approved the regulation to allow the commercial launch of DAB+ digital radio services for the first time.

Following wide industry consultation the Italian radio broadcasters, public and commercial, worked in collaboration to produce regulation which allows the radio sector to move to digital adding benefits for both broadcasters and listeners. The regulation will allow broadcasters across Italy to migrate their services from analogue to digital offering listener’s new content and multi-media services.

The Italian regulation states that DAB+ digital radio will be launched in Band III. It provides regulation on coverage, networks for national services, spectrum allocation for services, local coverage and rules on simulcasting and new content. The regulation will be put into effect from January 2010.

EtherWaves announced the availability of a new capability of its ClearSignal multi-standard solution for Digital Radio on 8 Jan 10. The patented SDR (Software Defined Radio) software module enables an incredible smooth transition between alternative sources of an audio program.

This feature is particularly attractive for in-car receivers, which usually experience a constantly varying coverage. When the reception quality deteriorates, the receiver must be able to identify and intelligently switch the reception from a transmitter whose reception became marginal, to another transmitter of the same station and with a better reception. For example, the car might travel from a DAB reception area to a DAB+ area and thus need to switch between the two systems, or might need to switch from digital radio reception to FM reception – or the other way around.

Current ClearSignal solution includes support for dual DAB, DAB+, T-DMB and DRM, audio and data – both in single-tuner and dual-tuner options.

PURE announces that it has reached the three million unit milestone in its sales of digital radios worldwide. It took six years to get to the one million mark which was announced in December 2006, and only three years to triple that figure to three million today.
